Formed by University of Munich students and their professor, The White Rose was a small, non-violent Nazi resistance group in Germany who spoke out against Nazi policies. Between June 1942 and February 1943, the members created and distributed leaflets that called for the active opposition of the German people to Adolf Hitler's regime. Seven members were executed in February 1943 and many others were imprisoned. The group's sixth leaflet, their last, known as the “Manifesto of the Students of Munich,” was later airdropped over Germany in June 1943 by Allied planes.

Background
Formed in 1942 by University of Munich students, The White Rose was a small, non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany that spearheaded a nine-month anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign calling for active opposition to Adolf Hitler's regime. Primary members of the group included Sophie and Hans Scholl, Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, Dr. Kurt Huber, Hans Leipelt, Traute Lafrenz, Katharina Schueddekopf, Marie-Luise Jahn and George Juergen Wittenstein. Seven members of the group were executed in 1943 and many others were imprisoned. Two of The White Rose members survived the ordeal, Dr. George Juergen Wittenstein who currently lives in Santa Barbara and Mrs. Traute Lafrenz-Page, who immigrated to the US in 1947 and now lives in South Carolina.
Get Envolved!
If you are interested in getting involved with The White Rose Exhibit through any of the activities below, send an email or call the local contact below.
- Host the Exhibit. Schools, universities, museums, community centers, etc. are still needed to host the exhibit. The exhibit consists of 47 panels (27.5 x 39.4 inches) transported in an aluminum box (47.25 x 29.5 x 7.1 inches; weight: 220 lb). Panels can be mounted on a wall like pictures or hung from the ceiling or a scaffold. A freestanding version of the exhibit is also being developed. Examples of installed exhibits can be found on in the 'Resources' area below (see White Rose Foundation Facebook Page and various articles).
- Join the Steering Committee. Volunteers are needed to help plan and support the exhibit's journey in the Pacific Northwest
